Colloquial and conversational in his tone, Dave makes the information accessible even for the beginner, yet he fills the text with expert information gleaned over years of building amps for world-class rock musicians. Beginning with an overview of amplifier sound, Dave gives instructions on how to create "good dirty tones", "old-school swampy", and "brittle and zingy", just to name a few, and educates readers on eliminating "hum" and avoiding the "can-full-of-bees" syndrome. Every kid or adult who wants to play electric guitar must read this book. I always knew that using this one extra long guitar cord tamed my pedals, and never knew why, but now I do. Even as a seasoned player, I learned things that I never knew, and I've read every book on amps out there. This book brings it all together (for both transistor and tube amps) in an uncomplicated, easy to understand and use format. And this book really is for people who play electric guitar, and not those who want to break out a soldering iron and mod their amps. Kudos to the author! 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful This review is from: The Guitar Amplifier Player's Guide: An instruction and reference manual for musicians (Paperback) I had a few business flightslast week and read the entire book while on planes and in airports! I sure enjoyed it and found it really well written. Quite informative and entertaining too. It's a great book for anyone looking at buying an amp, especially an amp with a relatively high ticket price - so they buy the right amp. I found a some useful info that I'll try out, and I'm sure your other readers will too. It's a real good reference, and is well laid out. Definitely much better than other books on the topic that I have seen. |
