4.0 out of 5 stars Steel mania, December 25, 2004
By

This review is from: Lap Steel Guitar (Paperback)
If you're captivated by the fat whine of a Supro steel, the cutting cry of a tripleneck Fender Stringmaster, or the mellow twang of a Weissenborn hollowneck acoustic, you'll flip over Lap Steel Guitar. Author Andy Volk has interviewed or profiled more than 40 great players of all styles -- including Hawaiian, country, Western swing, gospel, Cajun, and roots rock -- and gathered info crucial to anyone who wields a tone bar. Such masters as Leon McAuliffe, Don Helms, Herb Remington, Jerry Byrd, Freddie Roulette, Aubrey Ghent, Greg Leisz, David Lindley, Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar, and Debashish Bhattacharya share their secrets with Volk, who organizes the resulting treasure into a fun, yet instructive read. Just the tuning charts -- which Volk has codified for every player -- are worth the price of admission, but we also learn how these masters approach their music and what gear they use to get their sound.

Volk devotes another section to guitars, serving up juicy details... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about a great instrument, March 20, 2004
By
Bill (Santa Cruz, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lap Steel Guitar (Paperback)
The lap steel guitar is an incredibly expressive instrument that covers a wide range of genres. It is the signature sound of what most us think of when we think of Hawaiian music. The lap steel cries and moans in country music, wails in roots and rock, and reaches the sublime in east Indian raga. Because the sound that comes out of it is so closely linked to the hands of the individual player, no two players sound completely alike.

Andy Volk's "Lap Steel Guitar" is a well-written, thoughtful, and highly engaging book on this very unique instrument. The interviews of notable players are highly entertaining and very informative (most often giving the tunings used by the particular player) . There are also beautiful color photographs of instruments dating from the earlier part of the 20th century to the present, with descriptions of the unique qualities of each instrument. Also of note is information on manufacturers of lap steel guitars and accessories, and other... Read more

This review is from: Lap Steel Guitar (Paperback)
Andy Volk has authored the definitive book about lap-style and console steel guitar. Simply titled "Lap Steel Guitar", this book includes interviews with, and profiles of, more than 35 of the greatest electric & acoustic steel guitarists of the past and present in the Hawaiian, Country, Western Swing, American Roots, Cajun, Sacred, Rock & Roll, and World Music idioms as well as 40 color pages containing photographs of some of the most desired vintage steel guitars and new instruments from many of the best contemporary builders, as well as comprehensive information about steel guitar tunings.

It's a deep book with a lot of useful information, beautifully laid out and well organized. It contains great interviews with famous and obscure musicians, all of whom should be better known thanks to this book.

Andy's book deserves to be up there with Lorene Ruymar's as a standard reference for steel guitarists. The two books compliment each other well and are a must-have... Read more

This review is from: 100 Tips For Guitar You Should Have Been Told (includes CD) (Paperback)
I found this book to be a real jewel. Basically, it teaches you how to effectively play the guitar by "feeling" and ear rather than by memorized tablature licks. (The book makes an emphasis on lead-guitar playing, altough it has a neat rhythm-playing section). The author states that unfortunately, tablature has become a mainstream method for guitar teaching, and while tablature certainly has its own merits, the author views tablature as a musical equivalent of a "paint-by-number" painting; I couldn't agree more with this particular point of view. The book is rock solid and contains just the right amount of music theory to get the point in question through; it also contains numerous quotes by extremely talented guitarists (Satriani, Vai, Edward Van Halen, etc.) that support the author's point of views. Is the method effective? I have a cousin I consider to be a very talented guitar player (he has been learning guitar for two years aprox.). As an example on his... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Short on Substance, September 12, 2002
      By A Customer
This review is from: 100 Tips For Guitar You Should Have Been Told (includes CD) (Paperback)
I am experienced guitar player. The title of this book promised a list of useful tips for someone who has been playing the guitar for a while. Instead, the book provides a only a free-formed discussion aimed at beginners. Still, I read the book in anticipation of learning something useful "that I should have been told." I was disappointed to find the book to be little other than a pep talk telling the reader to forget about "academic" learning and play from the heart. While it seems like the author spends half the book denigrating the learning of scales, about the only real substance in the entire book is in the several pages devoted to scales. Without these much-maligned scales, where is the player supposed to find the notes for expression?

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to play guitar? This is the ideal first book., May 14, 2002
This review is from: 100 Tips For Guitar You Should Have Been Told (includes CD) (Paperback)
I wish I had this book when I started learning to play guitar in the late 70's, I would have made much faster progress. This book tells you what you need to learn. It also gives you a pretty good indication of how much emphasis should be placed on the various aspects of playing. It also talks about the oft overlooked non-technical aspects that are an essential part of great music. The author really has cut to the chase here -- the book is focused like a laser on giving the reader only the most useful information. Too many other books wander off into esoteric specialist topics without first identifying the core subjects and covering them -- I know, I have some truly awful guitar books from the late 70's. This book contains the distilled knowledge of years of learning, teaching and of interviewing great guitarists. I have already learned much of what David teaches here myself the hard way -- reading countless books and magazines, taking lessons, etc.. I intend to work through... Read more
