I am not a guitar player, but I am a music lover and as one I thoroughly enjoyed the first third of this book, which is comprised of short interviews of famous producers and guitar masters. From the very first interview when Brian Tarquin interviewed Shel Talmy who recorded the Who and the Kinks back in the Sixties, I was hooked. I read straight through in one sitting, almost like I was reading a novel that you can't put down.

The second third of the book covers the gear recording engineers and guitarists use to get their sound and basically held no interest for me, but if you're a guitarist, I can see where it would be enormously interesting and useful to you. And the last third of the book is appendixes.

The book is very well written and holds your interest and I enjoyed it very much. This is a book for aspiring guitarists that anybody can enjoy.

For all the recording geeks, guitar freaks, and rock aficionados out there, this book is written for you. Whether you want to know what pedal your favorite guitar player uses or read about the mike most favored by famous recording artists, it's in here. It's for beginners looking to learn how to recreate their favorite guitarist's special sound. It's for weekend warriors who live in their basement recording local bands. And it's for people who just plain like music.

It has interviews, listings of websites and youtube tutorials, advice for sound performance, equipment recommendations, and apparently, years of recording experience by the author to back him up; with an extensive appendix as well.

Most readers will not be able to afford the high end amps mentioned or even recognize some of equipment recommended. But there is something for everyone. It's an easy read, entertaining, and you take what you need from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but with a few drawbacks, April 19, 2012

This book takes you into the studio with your guitar favorites, and shows you how they get their sound.

There is a huge bunch of info you won't get elsewhere. It's like sitting down with a bunch of producers/engineers to get the benefit of years of experience.

It's worth reading at any level, if you're an experienced player or simply a bedroom master, wondering why you don't sound as good as the records.

But here's where I dislike the book. You can't use it to start in setting up your own studio, although I'll admit that the book doesn't aim to do this, and there are several good books devoted to starting recording yourself.

Because of this, there's little info on cost-effective solutions. Components are referenced as the engineers see fit, and in a few cases (like the Shure SM57 mike) they get praise, although they're low price. But equally there's references to $100,000 tools.

I can't blame Brian Tarquin for that. If you've... Read more
