The Classical Guitar: Its Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1800 Reviews
| 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful This review is from: The Classical Guitar: Its Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1800 (Paperback) If you want a catalog of current and past performers of the classical guitar, then this book is for you. However, there are only 9 pages devoted to the evolution of the instrument and a couple dozen to guitar makers. Really, the title of this book is misleading: it should be something like - A catalog of classical guitarists and their discographies. It does succeed in presenting a synopsis of every performer you could possibly ever hear play the guitar, but the evolution? Of this we get nine pages. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: The Classical Guitar: Its Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1800 (Paperback) A comprehensive but somewhat tedious listing of most major and minor guitarists with a more selective listing of guitar makers. But the book lacks a substantive and cohesive accounting of the evolution of the guitar, its role in and impact on music during the last century. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Bourbeau "arsburbeaux" (Ann Arbor, MI United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Classical Guitar: Its Evolution, Players and Personalities Since 1800 (Paperback) I've always thought of Summerfield's guitar books (see also, "The Jazz Guitar: It's Evolution And It's Players") as deluxe periodicals. Lot's of general information, nice photos, kind of mundane. A good reference for the enthusiast, though. |
